Lucebert (pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk) was born in Amsterdam in 1924. He developed into a prominent visual artist and poet.
Lucebert is often considered a representative of the post-war Cobra movement, but he was only marginally involved with this group. He took part in the legendary Cobra exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1949, but primarily as a poet. In the fifties he did draw and paint, but almost exclusively on paper. It was not until the late fifties that he began to manifest himself emphatically as a painter and developed his own style. During the first half of the sixties he made his most beautiful and impressive paintings, in which fairytale-like and mythical, sometimes terrifying creatures appear. In his later work he had distorted characters and fantasy creatures, set up in powerful contour lines, depict scenes and tell their stories.
Lucebert was known for his unwavering zeal and creative drive. His oeuvre is extensive. Throughout his painting career he experiments with styles and forms, but his personal signature remains recognizable.
Lucebert exhibited worldwide, such as at the Venice Biennale and in the New York Guggenheim Museum. He received important prizes for his poetry, including the PC Hooft Prize and the Constantijn Huygens Prize. He was awarded the Jacob van Looy Prize for double talents for his complete oeuvre.
