Information about the artist:
Luis Filcer (Zhitomir (Ukraine) December 4, 1927 – July 19, 2018 San Miguel de Allende (Mexico) ), graphic artist and painter.
-Education: Escuola de Bellas Artes 'San Carlo' Mexico ; Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Paris); Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma ; Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam).
Luis Filcer was born in Ukraine. Fearing the pogroms, his Jewish family moved to Mexico where he grew up in the 1930s. At the age of 17 he started his training as an artist at the art school of San Carlos. He won several art competitions and represented Mexico at several Biennales in Chile, Japan and England. After receiving a scholarship, Louis Filcer studied and worked at various art academies in Europe. He also settled for a while in the Netherlands, where he lived and worked for twenty years.
From a review: “Filcer paints the contradictions in man on the social, economic and religious level. His works show us different (unpleasant) human relationships. He shows abuse of power and unbalanced authoritarian relations. He paints the decadent judiciary with enormous bodies and an ironic smile. The hypocritical bourgeoisie and the corrupt clerical power are also discussed in Filcer. He always sided with the weak. He also paints fishermen, beggars, farmers and prostitutes because he feels connected to them. His paintings are an indictment, a protest against the heartlessness of those in control. However, Filcer also paints human pleasure and sultry nights. For example, the Amsterdam red light district made a big impression on Filcer in the 1960s. Filcer also draws simple earthly people full of primary feelings of love, loyalty and connection”.
