Martin van Waning was a son of Gijsbertus Martin van Waning and Maria Cornelia Johanna Trijssenaar. His father was a referendary at the Council of State and was an amateur watercolour painter, his uncle Kees van Waning also painted. Van Waning studied mechanical engineering in Delft, but after completing his studies he devoted himself entirely to painting. He took lessons from artists such as Charles Dankmeijer, Jan van Rhijnen and Willem de Zwart and later went to the art centre in Wiesbaden. In Germany he met the Russian Grand Duke Orlov and became his private secretary. Together with Orlov he travelled through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa. In 1917 Van Waning settled in the Netherlands again and lived first in The Hague and from 1925 on the Veluwe.
In 1937 he moved to the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog, where he set up his studio in the former maritime school. During the Second World War the studio was bombed and a large part of his work destroyed. The influence of the Hague School is noticeable in Van Waning's paintings. He painted waterscapes and landscapes, among other things.
