Through his friendship with Piet Mondriaan and Bart van der Leck, Peter Alma was related to the De Stijl group. While many artists from this group worked towards a utopian abstraction, Alma continued to work figuratively. Alma, a convinced communist, looked for opportunities within his oeuvre to serve the community and in particular the labour movement. By means of his graphic work, which is characterised by clear black-and-white contrasts and simple pictorial messages, and his monumental art in public buildings, he tried to reach the common man in language that everyone could understand. Alma's best-known monumental work is his colourful mural in the Amstel station.
