Dutch Impressionism The landscapes, flower still lifes, portraits, cityscapes and ballet scenes by Ton Albers are wonderful examples of Dutch Impressionism. You immediately see the relationship with the Hague School: atmospheric, Dutch skies, exuberant light, fabulous technology. He was inspired by Jacob Maris, Hendrik Weissenbruch and Kees Verwey. Especially his watercolor technique is unsurpassed in spontaneity and color and light effects. “Sunlight caught on paper”, according to Ton himself.
Ton Albers (Amsterdam, 1923) is a Dutch watercolourist. Albers attended the arts and crafts school in his hometown and then was taught by Piet Landskroon for twelve years. During the Second World War he interrupted his studies and joined the resistance. He worked as a designer for the corporate world. From the seventies he devoted himself entirely to watercolor painting and making lithographs with his own printing press. He was inspired by the art of the Dutch Impressionists, especially Hendrik Weissenbruch, Jacob Maris and Kees Verwey. Albers worked in the tradition of the Hague School: atmosphere, mood and light. He developed his own handwriting with the subjects: landscapes, beach scenes (the Wadden Islands), flower still lifes, cityscapes, ballet scenes and portraits. Much work is included in the ING collection, in collections of large multinationals (AkzoNobel) and private individuals. Ton Albers has exhibited in, among others, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Singer Museum in Laren, the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, Slot Zeist in Zeist and the Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen. From 1964, Albers has been a member – and secretary – of De Brug for 20 years. He was also a member of Arti et Amicitiae since 1970.
