Futurism is an art movement of Italian origin. The movement encompasses different ideas, but the connecting characteristics are movement, dynamics, color, powerful lines and new technology. Progress was the subject of their art and so the artists sought to capture dynamism and movement. The emerging photography also influenced futurism because it could play with shutter speed and in this way capture movement. In addition, Futurism fitted in well with the emerging nationalism in Europe, and fitted in with the war enthusiasm that characterized the eve of the First World War. Politics and futurism were therefore closely intertwined. For example, many of the futurists took part in demonstrations calling for Italy to join the war.
