Ans Wortel (1929-1996) was a Dutch artist, poet and writer, known for her strongly autobiographical and expressive works. As an autodidact, she developed a unique style that has been described as abstract figurative art. Her oeuvre included gouaches, oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, collages, lithographs, etchings, sculptures and glass sculptures. Central to her work were human emotions, love, relationships and mother-child relationships, often depicted by naked, distorted figures in unspecified spaces, accompanied by poetic texts. In 1963 she won first prize at the Paris Biennale, which strengthened her position as a leading female artist in post-war Dutch modern art.
