Piet van der Hem (1885-1961) was a Dutch painter, illustrator, and graphic artist, known for his lithographs and other works that give a vivid impression of life in the early 20th century. His work includes portraits, cityscapes, fashion scenes, and political caricatures, often with a humorous and sometimes satirical undertone.
Van der Hem's lithographs reflect his powers of observation and his interest in everyday life, especially in the bustling Amsterdam of that time. He worked as an illustrator for various newspapers and magazines, including De Nieuwe Amsterdammer and Pan. His lithographs range from caricatures of famous figures to impressionistic scenes of city life and fashion. His work is strongly influenced by French art and the Belle Époque. Van der Hem often travelled to Paris, which greatly inspired him; the city brought him into contact with styles such as Impressionism and Art Nouveau, which is reflected in his lithographs and paintings.
In addition to fashion and cityscapes, he also made political and social prints. His satirical work commented on current events, often with a humorous twist. These lithographs are still sought after for their historical value and expressive style, which capture the atmosphere of the early 20th century.
