Beginning in 1965, Indiana worked with composer Virgil Thompson to design the sets and costumes for Gertrude Stein's 1947 opera Mother of Us All. Based on the life of Susan B. Anthony, one of the most famous advocates of women's suffrage in the United States, the opera was presented in 1976 as part of a bicentennial celebration by the Santa Fe Opera. Indiana created more than 200 paper collages of her costumes and sets.
