Jurriën M. Beek (1879-1965) was a gifted Dutch painter. He painted a versatile oeuvre: landscapes, still lifes, portraits and seascapes. And was inspired by the 19th century landscape painter Koekkoek. Jurriën M. Beek was born in Arnhem and lived there (with a short interruption around 1902 when he moved to Amsterdam) until 1929. During that period he painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes. He also made large wall paintings, such as in the now-disappeared Arnhem cinema 'Flora'. In 1929 he moved to Scheveningen and added seascapes to his oeuvre.
He then lived for a long time in The Hague on Noordeinde. There he often painted street views from behind the window of his studio on the second floor, especially in the cold winter of 1947. Downstairs, in the shop, he sold his own work.
